Hi friends, T&C 5:4 reads:
"And it shall be given you also to make a selection of sacred hymns, as it shall be given you, which is pleasing unto me to be had in my church, for my soul delights in the song of the heart, yea, the song of the righteous is a prayer unto me, and it shall be answered with a blessing upon their heads."

This was a direction given to Emma Smith back in 1830. From this it is clear that the music is important to God.

In 1833 the printing press was destroyed thereby putting a stop to the publication of the 1833 Book of Commandments. This event also interrupted the publication of selected hymns in The Evening and the Morning Star. In 1835 a hymnal was finally typeset in preparation for the Kirtland temple dedication. It was printed in early 1836 and contained 90 hymns but was different from the LDS hymnals many of us are used to in that there was no sheet music, just lyrics.

Over the course of her life Emma continued to work on the project and eventually collected over 200 hymns. Because Emma did not go west with Brigham Young, the project came to rest with the RLDS church while the LDS church kinda did their own thing.

In our day, when we have the technological ability to print sheet music, and considering that we share a desire to preserve and re-enliven the restoration, we are working to produce two new Hymnals. One with a complete collection of Emma's hymns and another with many original hymns written more recently. A lot of work has been done towards this end and a lot remains to be done. We look forward to sharing more with you as the work progresses :)
